This Mulready sold for 11 pence per dozen instead of 15 pence charged by the Post Office, the balance being financed by advertising including two fantastic ads illustrated with steamships; Mulready with illustrated ads are very rare! Some Mulreadys published by Gilling had the particularity of having two circles marked "WAFER", where the mailer was supposed to put his wax seal. We sold a similar item in our auction 98-2 which sold for $1055, which in fact was NOT in such nice a quality as this one (as the sender followed instructions carefully and applied his seals where indicated which resulted in a hole in one of the ads.) On this Mulready, the seal is on the flap, resulting in an usual tear on the side. This lettersheet is very fresh for an item over 150 years old with no other faults except a minute tear in the Insurance ad. Addressed to Hampstead, Middlesex. Red Maltese Cross.
