9638 ENT image U.S.A. (1909) Ostriches*. Postal card (O) with printed advertising on reverse for Cawston Ostrich Farm and typed note indicating shipping of order. Edwin Cawston introduced ostrich farming into America by importing a flock of 50 birds from Africa. The ostriches were bred here so that ostrich feathers would not have to be imported from abroad. Ostrich plumes went out of style in World War I, leading to the demise of the industry. A rare and historic item!
